Trust A Few Haruspex Trilogy Part One Fortune Fools Book 4 eBook EM SwiftHook
E.M. Swift-Hook’s TRUST A FEW is simply excellent writing. If you love science fiction with complex plotting, note-perfect world-building, and characters who are as flawed and complicated as everyone you meet in real life, then you must read this book.
Every single character has a well-developed backstory (that is never belabored) and place in the convoluted machinations of a universe that is full of the same inequities of our world today, writ larger. While the characters struggle to balance their personal integrity against the demands of situations that challenge and insult those values, you really feel their dilemmas. How does one honor an old friend when they no longer know who they are? Who is a hero, and who is a terrorist or outlaw? How does one deal with a past one cannot recall? When does one have to stop thinking a person is a friend and decide they are an enemy—and vice versa?
This is a continuation of Swift-Hook’s FORTUNE’S FOOLS series, but in no way do you need to read the previous books to be almost instantly immersed in the main action of TRUST A FEW. Do yourself a favor and start reading this immediately!

Trust A Few Haruspex Trilogy Part One Fortune Fools Book 4 eBook EM SwiftHook Reviews
Trust a Few is the first book in the Haruspex Trilogy, but follows the evolution of characters developed in the original trilogy, Fortune's Fool. Admittedly, I chose to read this book out of sequence because I was intrigued by the added element of organized crime woven into this series' fabric. However, with or without any background in this "trilogy's trilogy," Trust a Few easily stands alone as a compelling dystopian novel.
Set in a future world permeated by the most primitive and brutal of motivations, E.M. Swift-Hook has a penchant for strong female characters that are every bit as powerful, ruthless, intelligent, and deliberate as any male protagonist. In this case, Shame Cullen is the natural leader of the most feared syndicate in a violent universe. And while clearly adept at word building, world building, and character development, every personality is complex and deeply engaging.
Trust a Few opens with our protagonist, Avilon Revid, a former fighter who at one time posed the greatest threat to the Coalition, navigating the world with no memory of his former life. Labeled a terrorist and mass murderer by some, Revid is released from his 5 years of service in a camp that confines the most vicious criminals and hopeless dregs of society. No one survives without cunning ruthlessness and a willingness to shed blood. Having to find work and learn to live outside of the structured and regimented life of a soldier, Avilon's extraordinary warrior skills are a marketable commodity in Cullen's organization.
Durben Chola, another dark character to re-emerge in this book, once again finds Revid and, together, are determined to find Jaz, Avilon's brother-in-arms from their days warring on the frontlines. The twists and turns in this saga keeps the reader turning pages until the final sentence... and then leaves one wanting more. For me, the true genius in this story lies is the exploration of human character and the moral dilemmas and challenges that continue to take shape. Those who may have seemed dubious and unscrupulous might turn out to be those whose principles are simply foreign amidst endemic corruption.
While I'm not necessarily a science-fiction fan, the sheer dystopian ethos and relatable, engaging characters make it impossible to not be drawn into the story and deeply invested in their journeys. This is an action-driven narrative that fundamentally revolves around a depth of depravity as well as compassion of which people are all capable. And the plot is seamlessly tied together through the talent and skill of a highly-accomplished author that leaves her audience anxiously waiting for more.
I found Trust a Few to be the most standstill book in the first four books so far in the “trilogy’s trilogy” (nine books) by this author. This time, it is in a futuristic “Mafia” crime-ridden city, and the main plot of the book appears to be political machinations of a crime syndicate to keep key players in power or to avoid downfall by murder. I felt myself plodding along in this book now that I was without the exotic locations or the geopolitics between countries in the first trilogy.
As well, it was a little hard to appreciate what the three main characters, all men, had in bonding to one another. The loyalty and friendship seemed to be from past history thus making me wonder why they wanted to continue to be emotionally invested into one another. Surely there are better places to aspire. Why stay in a crime-ridden metropolis? In the first trilogy, at least all the three main characters were on a primitive planet with very limited access to faster-than-light speed. Here, they can leave anytime. As well, I sometimes found the plot hard to follow, not being able to figure out what the overall story is or what had been accomplished hundreds of pages later other than the enjoyment of seeing familiar characters back together one more time. If I had to sum up this book to a friend, I probably would struggle.
I always liked Durban Chola, and he seems like the only reasonable man here, and I liked the new character Charity Sweetling. Although it seemed a bit at times that her initial cast-off into stateless person was a bit forced, and she seemed to be along for the ride.
E.M. Swift-Hook has done it again.
I loved the Transgressor Trilogy, so I was very excited to read this first book in the continuing saga of Fortune's Fools. It did not disappoint me. The characters are well written, full of very human flaws, and sometimes not very nice, but they are real to me. Jazatar Baldrik is a dark man both in looks and in spirit, but he has his own code of honor. He is loyal to his friends, even when they don't deserve it. Avilon is broken, even more so now than in the previous trilogy. His only hope is in his friends, but will he let them help him?
This book is complex, with a lot woven into the story and the world that supports it. E.M. Swift-Hook delves into the dark underbelly of the struggle between government control and the fight for freedom. It reminded me of the movie Serenity. The government has the general populace believing they are safe and well cared for, but the steps the Coalition must take to keep up that façade are less than beneficial to anyone outside of the mainstream.
I highly recommend Trust A Few and after you read it, go get the Transgressor Trilogy. It will be worth it.
